Moving into a care home is a big step for anyone. You're bound to have lots of questions about what life here will be like for your loved one so we've detailed below a few of the most common questions we get asked to help you get a full picture of the wonderful life they can look forward to at The Gables Residential Care Home in Oakwood, Derby.

What is the home like?

The Gables is a truly wonderful place combining the familiarity and comfort of a traditional family home with the modern convenience and facilities of a purpose-built residential home.

Location & Surrounds

Situated in its own grounds in the charming and desirable residential neighbourhood of Oakwood, the home is accessed via its own driveway making it a very quiet, peaceful and secure location.

Oakwood itself is well served by local facilities which are just a short distance away. These include shops, restaurants and pubs and a cinema so there'll be plenty of options should you decide to venture out of the home with your loved one during a visit.

If they like nature and walking, Chaddesden Wood, one of just two ancient oak woodlands in the city, is nearby. Taking a walk in this beautiful area, you'll see birds, bats and butterflies among the picturesque oak trees.

Transport links to the home are good with the A52, which links Derby to Nottingham, just a 5-minute drive away and J25 of the M1 just 9 minutes away if you're coming in from the motorway. Derby City Centre is an 8-minute drive away while the train station is just two minutes more.

If you don't have a car, the home is well served by the bus network with regular and frequent services into Derby centre just a 20 minutes ride away.

Inside & Accommodation

The building originally existed as The Gables Farm, growing root crops such as carrots and potatoes. It still retains some original features such as the Gable itself (hence the name!)

In 1990, the property underwent significant renovation and extension to turn it into a purpose-built residential home, consisting of two floors with 9 bedrooms on the ground floor and 19 on the first. The rooms are a mixture of en-suite and non en-suite to accommodate a variety of requirements and budgets.

The home has two lounges. The large main lounge is spacious, seats up to 18 people and has direct access to the garden terrace. This is the main social hub of the home and is where many of our indoor activities and events take place. The smaller lounge still comfortably seats up to 10 and also has access to the garden. This is a great place to enjoy your own company while reading or for having a quiet chat with friends.

The conservatory seats up to 6 and is popular in summer for its glowing sunlight and in winter as a place to watch the birds and other wildlife in the garden when it's too cold to venture out.

The dining room is well equipped, beautifully decorated and spacious enough for all 28 of our residents to eat together in complete comfort.

As befitting a purpose-built residential home there are ample bathing and toilet facilities with 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets on the upper floor and 4 toilets and 2 bathrooms on the ground floor so you'll never be far away when the need arises.

Is there a garden?

Yes! Your loved one will be surrounded by beautiful and extensive gardens for them to enjoy.

The home is set in three-quarters of an acre of mature grounds bordered by trees and hedges making a very private, secure and secluded garden. It's truly a delightful place for your loved one to be. In the summer months, they can take a walk on the immaculately tended lawns, framed by well-established flower beds bursting with a riot of cheerful coloured plants that delight the senses with perfumed fragrances when in bloom.

If they like wildlife they will love the large outdoor aviary where they can sit and watch the birds preening and chirping and can even feed them their favourite treats.

For those who enjoy sitting outdoors and enjoying the sunshine, we have a large paved terrace area that is a real sun trap in summer. Here your loved one will be able to take afternoon tea accompanied by delicious homemade cakes while chatting to the newfound friends they'll undoubtedly make. Or simply relax and read a book or take in the view.

If your loved one enjoys gardening they can also keep their green fingers by tending to their own area of the garden with plants and flowers.

What will their room be like?

The Gables has 28 rooms spread over two floors and with a variety of styles, shapes and sizes so you'll be able to choose something that is exactly in line with your tastes and budget. For more information about fees and what's included please click here.

All rooms are comfortable with a light and airy feel while many have views of the garden. Whichever they choose, your loved one's room will be tastefully decorated and well equipped with everything they need for daily life.

This is their home so we'd love them to bring their own ornaments, treasured mementoes and small furniture items to make their room feel comfortably familiar. We'll even decorate it in line with their personal taste to make it truly feel like home if they'd like.

All rooms are easily accessible for those with limited mobility and there is a built-in shaft lift so stairs are never a problem. Your loved one will always be easily able to access the communal areas to get involved in the many activities provided or to simply join friends for a chat and catch up.

How will they spend their day?

There's never a dull moment at The Gables Home!

If your loved one likes getting involved there are many activities, visiting entertainers, games and parties for them to enjoy. Our in-house Activities Co-ordinator has worked at the home for over 20 years and all activities are tailored to suit individual capabilities and tastes. So, from exercise classes to live music performances, group games to walks around the lovely grounds, there's sure to be something that suits them perfectly.

How do I know my loved one will be well looked after?

Honestly, one of the most difficult things you'll encounter when looking for a suitable care home for your loved one is judging how good the care they provide is. Of course, everyone says they provide excellent care, but how do you really know they do?

Here are a few very strong indicators we believe show The Gables to be one of the top care homes in the region.

Very long-serving staff

A high turnover of staff is indicative of a poorly run home where the employees are either unhappy or unsuitable. This is obviously not a good situation for the residents where building a relationship of friendship and trust is paramount in delivering what is often very intimate care. It's therefore important to find out exactly what the staffing situation is in each home you're interested in.

We're delighted (and very proud) to say that The Gables has an extremely loyal and long-serving workforce with an average length of service of 11 years and several members of staff who have been with the home for 20 or 30 years.

This means our team will have the time to really get to know your loved one's individual needs and requirements so that we can provide the best possible care for them and build up a strong and lasting bond of friendship and trust.

Absolutely no agency staff!

We took the decision to not use agency staff over 20 years ago and we've never used them since.  It's simply not possible for temporary agency staff to care for your loved one as well as permanent members of staff. They do not have time to get to know their routines, likes and dislikes or to be able to build meaningful relationships.

In addition, having someone they've never seen before suddenly appear to provide what is often very intimate care is uncomfortable and distressing for anyone and we will not put our residents through it.

We recommend asking any home you visit how often they use agency staff as this can have a big bearing on the quality of life and standard of care provided to your loved one at that home.

We're family-owned and run

The home is family owned and run with several members actively involved in the day to day provision of care. This gives us a unique insight into our residents' lives and enables us to make important business decisions based on their well being rather than corporate profits.

As anyone who has run their own business will confirm, it's more than a job. It becomes your whole life as well as your livelihood and providing the very highest levels of care is something we're very passionate about. So you can rest assured your loved one will enjoy a great life at The Gables and we're here and available to discuss their care with you anytime.

Reviews and testimonials

First, a confession. We have to admit that we're a bit behind the times and have only recently started asking our families if they would mind providing a review of the care their loved one receives at The Gables. So we don't have as many reviews as other homes.

However, we've now begun and the best place to find reviews of care homes is  www.carehome.co.uk. This is the largest website in the UK listing care homes and here residents and families (the people who really know how good the level of care is at a home) can leave a review and rate a home's performance in 12 different areas. All reviews are verified to ensure they are genuine. You can read our reviews by clicking here or on our home page and we'll be adding to these steadily as we go on.

We do however have lots of letters and cards from families who have been delighted and thankful for the care we've provided for their loved ones over the years. We'd love you to come and take a look at The Gables for yourself and you'll be more than welcome to read these during your visit.

Activities

Finally, check out a care home's blog and Facebook page for actual evidence of the great lives their residents are living at the home. You should see lots of pictures and videos of the activities and events taking place at the home. This is also a great way for you to keep in touch and get involved with what's happening at the home. You can check out our blog by clicking here and our Facebook page here. While you're on our Facebook page why not Like it and leave a comment? We'd love to hear from you.

Will they enjoy the food?

Definitely, if they like tasty cuisine prepared from freshly sourced local ingredients.

Our Head Chef Fabrizio Pilia honed his culinary skills in Sardinia, Italy before perfecting them in Uk restaurants.

He now brings that wealth of experience and expertise as Head Chef working with two assistants to produce mouthwateringly tasty food for all pallets and dietary needs.

The kitchen has a five-star food rating and is a busy place producing breakfast, lunch and dinner every day with typically two main choices for each meal, along with any special dietary needs.

Your loved one will never be short of something tasty to satisfy their taste buds as they can also enjoy the morning tea and coffee round served with snacks and nibbles such as homemade biscuits, cakes and pastries. Then there's a second round of the same in the afternoon.

In addition, a range of fruit and snacks is available any time of the day and to top it off supper is also available with freshly made sandwiches, snacks and lighter bites!

Main meals are served in the spacious dining room which is the beating heart of the home and a great place for socialising. If the mood takes them, your loved one can catch up with friends while enjoying their meal here or alternatively they can eat in the living room or their own bedroom. This is their home and the choice is theirs.

What should I do now?

The best way to find out if The Gables Home is the right place for you or your loved one is to come and visit. We’d be delighted to meet you and to show you around the facilities.
